US President Donald Trump threatened to use “overwhelming lethal force” until Iranian-backed Houthi rebels ceased assaulting ships in a crucial maritime corridor after launching a series of airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. The Houthis claim that nine civilians were murdered.

“No terrorist force will stop American commercial and naval vessels from freely sailing the Waterways of the World,” Trump wrote in a social media post, adding, “Our brave Warfighters are right now carrying out aerial attacks on the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets, and to restore Navigational Freedom.

He also vowed to hold Iran “fully accountable” for the activities of its proxy and cautioned the nation against aiding the rebel group. Trump issued the warning two weeks after he wrote to Iranian authorities outlining a plan to resume bilateral discussions about Iran’s developing nuclear weapons program, which he has sworn not to allow to come to fruition.

The bombings come after the Houthi recently announced that, in retaliation for Israel’s siege of Gaza, they will start attacking Israeli warships again. Since then, there have been no reports of Houthi strikes.
