Sir Keir Starmer has stated that in order to get Russia to the bargaining table, Western sanctions on the country must be strengthened rather than loosened. Vladimir Putin accused the prime minister of “playing games and playing for time” after the Russian leader insisted on lifting sanctions prior to the implementation of a maritime truce mediated by the United States.
Now is not the time to pull back or weaken sanctions—now is the time to increase them to get them to the table,” Starmer stated while visiting European leaders in Paris. Co-hosting Thursday’s so-called “coalition of the willing” summit, French President Emmanuel Macron has hinted that a European reassurance force may “respond” in the event of a Moscow strike.
According to Starmer, peace negotiations in Ukraine require a “framework and a deadline” on Thursday.
He stated that he and his partners had decided that “we must go further now to support the peace process, support Ukraine, and increase the pressure on Russia to get serious” during the summit, which was attended by delegates from 30 countries as well as the European Union and NATO. It involves increasing the financial strain on Russia, expediting new tougher penalties, bearing down on Russia’s energy income, and working together on making this pressure count,” he stated.
