Despite Donald Trump’s increasing adoption of Russia’s talking points and his recent decision to temporarily halt military aid for Ukraine, which the Kremlin applauded, the European Commission has maintained that the US is still “an ally”.

The aid suspension follows a public outburst by Trump and his vice president, JD Vance, against Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. Europeans were taken aback by the image and reacted almost simultaneously to show support for the warring nation and its democratically elected leader. Yes, the United States are an ally,” said Stefan de Keersmaecker, deputy chief spokesperson for the Commission, on Tuesday.

The White House claims that the evaluation and halt of the aid, which reportedly includes over $1 billion in weapons and ammunition, is intended to show whether Zelenskyy is “committed” to negotiating peace with Russia.

While emphasizing the necessity of security assurances to restrain Vladimir Putin’s expansionism, Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness to participate in negotiations. Trump has offered a deal to exploit Ukraine’s resources in lieu of these assurances.
