NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte issued a dire warning on Wednesday, saying that the organisation would respond “devastatingly” if Russia attacked Poland or other nations. During a one-day visit to Warsaw, Rutte issued the warning and urged European countries to work together to expand their military and defence sectors as the US pushes Europe to ensure its own security.

Our Alliance will retaliate strongly if someone makes a mistake and believes they can attack Poland or any other ally without facing any repercussions. Our retaliation will be catastrophic,” Rutte stated, appearing with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk during a press appearance. Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and everyone else who would wish to attack us must understand this,” Rutte continued.

The warning from the NATO chief coincides with a new low in confidence among the 32-member alliance as a result of the Trump administration’s decision to prioritise American security in Asia and on its own borders. Simply put, now is not the time to go it alone. In a speech in Warsaw, Rutte stated, “Not for Europe or North America.” “Neither of us can handle the problems facing global security alone.
