On Sunday, tens of thousands of people gathered in Mexico City’s main square to join President Claudia Sheinbaum in celebrating the US’s decision to delay duties on a number of the nation’s products. As they applauded Sheinbaum, the audience held up big Mexican flags and shouted, “Mexico is to be respected!” Thankfully, respect and communication have won out,” she informed the audience.
The celebration follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Sheinbaum had made progress on illegal immigration and drug smuggling, which led to the postponement of 25% tariffs on numerous Mexican products for a month.
Sheinbaum organized a mass celebration on Sunday instead of announcing retaliatory measures. The president expressed optimism that tariffs would not be imposed on Mexico despite the ongoing threats and promised to maintain her composure when dealing with Trump.
Roberto González, a 68-year-old computer scientist, was one of Sheinbaum’s supporters. He held up a placard that said, “We are united Mexicans. González stated that keeping the nation united is crucial because only then would Mexico be able to “face one of the largest powers in the world.
