Zelensky is Optimistic, but Europe will Find it Difficult to Ensure Ukraine’s Safety

I met with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris with three other European journalists, and he was in a good mood. Following the interruption of a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, he returned to the Elysee Palace for a “tête à tête dinner.

Macron had not simply given him the benefit of the doubt. As we conversed in one of Paris’s great museums, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian national flag, blue and yellow, behind Zelensky in a picture window.

According to the French, he should feel like he was with friends. Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer are attempting to form a “coalition of the willing” to provide Ukraine with security guarantees in the event of a sustained ceasefire, and Zelensky had travelled to Paris to meet with leaders and diplomats from 30 other nations to discuss how they can contribute to this group.

Zelensky’s reception in Paris stood in stark contrast to the dehumanisation he received on his visit to the White House last month from US President Donald Trump and his vice president, JD Vance.
