According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the nation’s nuclear power facilities are a national asset rather than a private one. At a news conference on Thursday in Norway, he said: The people of Ukraine own all nuclear power plants. This is not a private nuclear power plant; it is a state facility. That is Ukraine’s nuclear energy situation.

According to an American statement, Zelenskyy’s remarks follow a phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian leader during which Trump allegedly recommended that Ukraine think about handing over ownership of its power facilities to the US for long-term security.

Zelenskyy later told reporters that the discussion was especially on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in southern Ukraine, which is under Russian occupation. The potential extent of US cooperation is unclear because the facility has been under Russian control since the beginning of the conflict, even though it is still connected to Ukraine’s electrical grid without producing electricity. Since Zaporizhzhia is still governed by Russia, the future of Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant is still uncertain.
